Summer has been great! We have done some fun, some challenging, and some meaningful things in worship with our series on Old Testament characters. I have been stretched and challenged by the figures we’ve covered. We have had some good studies—the book of Revelation and The Road to Character book study. Our Junior Disciples have had some good training and our children and youth have continued to learn and grow this summer. We’ve had some good times of fellowship with the barbeques and evenings at the Redlands Bowl. We’ve continued to support the ministries in our community and those around the world. But summer is over now and it’s time to get ready for fall!
Sunday, September 9, is “Kick-Off Sunday,” with our theme as Be the Salt! It marks the end of our summer hiatus from Sunday morning classes and Thursday night dinners and programs. It is a new beginning as we charge into fall with plans to grow in our faith, in our service, and in our community life as a church. On that morning we will begin at 8:45 with cinnamon rolls and fruit in Fellowship Hall. The children and youth will be escorted to their Sunday school classes and will have their first lesson of the new season. The adults will have an opportunity to hear about the studies and activities that will be options for spiritual growth and fellowship in the hour before worship each Sunday.
Kick-Off Sunday doesn’t end with the Sunday school hour. It will spill over into worship as we welcome back the Choir and the Worship Ensemble. But there is more! We will have the pleasure of being led in worship by Mark Zeeman who came last November as last-minute addition to our service. He played his own arrangement of “Holy, Holy, Holy” on the piano. Mark is a music missionary in Budapest, Hungary, with Calvary Chapel. He is also an alum of the American Baptist Campus Ministry at USC in the 1980’s. We will be giving Mark the portion of the service that is normally taken by the sermon. You will want to be at church on September 9th!
As we look ahead into the fall season I am so excited about the possibilities! We will have so many options for study and growth on Thursday nights for all ages. Pastor Nick will be co-leading with Isa Terrell (Communications Specialist) a manuscript Bible study in the book of Mark. I will be leading a series on “Tools for Spiritual Power” which will be a practical, “hands-on” study that will also introduce various teachers, writers and theologians who have something to share about drawing close to God.
We will have people coming to tell us about God’s work around the world from Myanmar to Nicaragua to Mexico. We will have opportunities to be involved and make a difference in our community. And our youth will be joining together with the youth groups of other churches for worship and fellowship.
Let us not forget that we are called to follow Jesus into our sphere of life and influence. As we come together as a church may we discover what the Holy Spirit can do with us as we follow Jesus corporately. The world needs for us to Be the Salt! Let’s do it!
